What Is Brown Fused Alumina?

A practical introduction to the material, common product forms and where it is used.

TECHNICAL GUIDE / 2026-10-01

The material

Brown fused alumina is an industrial aluminum oxide abrasive produced by fusing raw materials in an electric furnace. After cooling, the fused material is broken down and processed into grain or powder for specific applications.

The product is commonly supplied as abrasive F grit, coated abrasive P grit, refractory grain and fine powder. These are different purchasing forms, not interchangeable names for a single specification.

What buyers should specify

A useful inquiry starts with the application, target grit or size fraction, chemistry limits, particle size distribution, quantity and packing requirement. If a working sample exists, it can be used for comparison.

Product values should be confirmed in an agreed specification and batch test report. A broad series range alone does not establish the limits for a specific order.

Common applications

F grit is used in bonded abrasives and abrasive blasting. P grit is used in coated abrasive products such as belts and paper. Refractory grain and fine powder are selected for refractory mixes and other specified industrial formulations.

Specific chemical, size and performance values are subject to the agreed product specification, technical agreement and batch test result.
