TECHNICAL GUIDE / 2026-10-02
Short answer. Choose F or P from the product being made. F grit is the bonded abrasive series; P grit is the coated abrasive series. Keep the letter in every quotation, sample label and purchase order.
Different manufacturing routes
FEPA separates F grains for bonded abrasives from P grains for coated abrasives. CHAOYAN's F series is presented for grinding wheels, cutting discs and blasting; its P series is presented for abrasive belts, paper, cloth and flap products. These are distinct purchasing paths even where both catalogs show the same number.
A wheel maker should describe the bond and wheel application. A belt maker should describe backing, coating process and current grain specification. This lets the supplier discuss the right series rather than translate a numeric label mechanically.
| Decision | F series | P series |
|---|---|---|
| Main route | Bonded abrasive products | Coated abrasive products |
| Example | Grinding wheel / blasting | Abrasive belt / paper |
| Order label | F36 | P36 |
What the quote and PDS should agree on
Compare the exact series and model on the product page, PDS, sample bag and quotation. The agreed technical sheet should state chemistry, distribution and relevant physical properties, along with the method used to verify them. If the customer supplies a current sample, identify whether it is F or P before comparing results.
The same numeric suffix is not a substitute for a documented equivalence assessment. Product performance depends on the grain, bond or coating, process settings and finished-tool tests.
Selection guidance
Send the end-product type, current F or P designation, required grade, quantity and acceptance sheet with the inquiry. Ask for a labeled sample and compare it in your own process before changing the production grade.
Common mistakes
- Dropping the F or P prefix in an RFQ.
- Assuming a P36 can be substituted for F36 solely because both contain '36'.
Frequently asked questions
Are F and P grit interchangeable?
Do not assume so. They are specified for different abrasive product routes and require a documented comparison.
Which series fits abrasive belts?
The CHAOYAN P grit series is the catalog path for coated abrasive belts.
